Abstract
On 16 October 1946, the wives of Augustana College faculty members, women faculty members, and women in the administration organized the social group first known as the Augustana Dames. The women agreed to meet five times per year and pay annual dues of one dollar. A constitution was adopted in 1964. The group changed its name to the Augustana Women in 1984. Abstract
The Backman family was active in Galesburg, Ill., in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The head of the family was Carl August Backman, who immigrated to the United States in 1868 and began to study at Augustana College in 1875. Backman received a BA in 1881 and graduated from Augustana Theological Seminary in 1883. Carl E. Bagge was the former president of the National Coal Association and a leader of the coal industry’s public relations countermarch against environmental activism in the 1970s and 1980s. George Benson was born on August 3, 1873, in Moline, Illinois, to John and Louise Benson. He attended Moline schools as a youth, then enrolled in the Augustana College Conservatory of Music in Rock Island, Illinois.
